William Plumptre trained as a potter in Japan before setting up his studio in the UK in 1887.
He studied Ceramic Design at Chelsea College of Art before travelling to Japan in early 1985. He continued his training there in workshops of three different potters, including Tatsuzo Shimaoka.
William specialises in the technique of inlaying coloured slips of liquid clay into patterns of impressions made in the surface of the clay. He also uses both brushwork and combing.
He work in stoneware clay.
